Bennett at Six Months

Our sweet guy is now half a year old, and I can't believe how fast time is flying by.

He weighed in at 16 pounds, 14.25 oz. (37th percentile) and measured 26.75 inches (55th percentile).  The doctor was pleased with how he's growing and she loved all the smiles and attention he gave her.

Poor Bennett has been battling his first real cold (more than just sniffles) for over a week now.  He's losing a bit of sleep about it and coughing all day, but still pretty cheerful.

At the doctor's office Bennett surprised me by sitting up unassisted for the longest time ever.  He was motivated by staring at his beautiful reflection in the mirror.  My little narcissist.

He still hasn't found any solids he likes and so I've been too lazy to really bother forcing the issue.  We are starting again in ernest now and need to figure out what will get him interested enough to swallow something.  He might just not be a puree kid.

He takes 8 oz. bottles when offered and nurses 5 times per day so at least the milk thing works for him.

B is still on three naps each day, with the longest one in the middle.  Our beloved swing broke (after maybe 500 hours of use), so he's learning how to take that long nap without his swing.

It's great that Bennett is at the age he can be distracted out of crankiness by going outside or with a toy.  Life is made easier and he is happier.

Of course the paci is always the best distraction and we use it on and off all day.

He still loves going for walks in the Bjorn or stroller, and especially enjoys with Orelia rides along in the stroller to entertain him.

Orelia is definitely his most entertaining family member.  He loves watching her do anything and is always cracking up over her antics or general hugging of him.

Harper is getting more fun to watch these days too, apparently.  It's like he finally noticed the brown furry family member walking around.

Bennett's rolling is more controlled and he doesn't get "stuck" on his tummy anymore.  He hasn't used rolling as a true form of transportation yet, so he doesn't get too far off his play mat just yet.

Everyone who knows Bennett greets him with a smile and awaits their smile in return.  His gummy smiles are just about the best thing in the world.

We are loving this little six month-old to pieces!

Be Happy

 "Mommy, be happy."

Orelia says this to me.  A lot.

I got some advice from our preschool teacher last year to explain how you're feeling to your child as a method of trying to get them to behave.  It actually works pretty well for Orelia because she has always been pretty attuned to people's emotions.

Nowadays I often just give her my disapproving look and she says "You're not happy."

"No, I'm not happy," I say, as I look at her standing on the coffee table or putting one of Bennett's pacifiers in her mouth.

 "Mommy, be happy," she pleads.

There is a back and forth about what will make me happy and how her actions have made me sad.  Often we "make up" with her giving me a hug or being funny in some way where I can't help but smile and give up my mad facade.

The reality is, however, that while I may not be my happiest when she's smirking at me and driving me crazy, I am happy.  Very happy.

I'm so lucky and blessed and fortunate and grateful that I get to spend my days with my two little munchkins.

I'm happier in this job than I ever was at another.

I'm happier now than when I was a student and often without a care or real purpose.

Kids breathe such a life into you, and I'm so grateful for mine.

I may miss a handful of things from my old life, but, for me, doing what I'm doing is what makes me happy.

So don't tell Orelia, but Mommy is actually happy.

Happy Birthday, John

Happy birthday to the most wonderful man I know!

He has boundless energy for his children and endless patience for his wife.

He gives everyone in our family the love and attention they need - me, Orelia, Bennett, and Harper.

He keeps us all sane and happy and we all eagerly await his arrival home every night.

Thank you for everything you are and do.  We love you!

Orelia at Two and a Half

We have a classic Golden Book called "Busy Timmy" that Orelia loves to read.  The book essentially describes the day of a toddler named Timmy and all the things he can do "by himself" because he is a "big boy."

Orelia is very much a "big girl" these days and amazes us with her "I can do it myself" attitude.

I thought for her two and a half year recap I might take a page from "Busy Timmy" and recount Orelia's abilities.

Orelia is a big girl.  She wakes up in her big girl bed and stays in bed waiting for Daddy to come get her for breakfast.

Orelia can choose her clothes all by herself.  Orelia can thrown tantrums about her mother's opinions about such choices.

Orelia can take thirty minutes to get ready to leave the house.

Orelia can chat with Mommy in the car and eat snacks and drink bottled water like a big girl.

When listening to the radio in the car, she can say "No want this song.  No want this song.  No want this song." over and over until reminded to say "Please change it."  (Taylor Swift is dead to her.  Bruno Mars and Maroon 5 are preferred.)

Orelia can walk through parking lots safely and generally show just the right amount of caution around cars.

She can open every baby gate in the entire house and can now even unlock the back door and open it to escape to the back yard.  Yikes.

She can find Bennett's pacifiers, sneak them in, and calm him like an expert big sister.

She can help Daddy with the dishes (washing one plastic cup the entire time).

She can brush her teeth ten times each day and somehow manage to do almost no brushing and only toothpaste eating.

She can drink out of glass cups and eat off ceramic plates like a big girl.

She can put her laundry away in the correct drawers.

She can take almost any item of clothing or footwear off, and can get pants, socks, and shoes on.

She can climb up ladders and down ladders.  She can sit safely on big kid swings for pushing, though baby swings can be more fun if they allow for faster riding.

She can make sand castles and promptly destroy them.

She can lounge on the couch flipping through novels or also flip through her favorite books recounting some of the highlights of the story.

 She can sing her ABCs.

She can recognize lots of letters.

She can comfort those who are hurt and offer hugs and apologies when necessary.

She can take turns and ask for her turn when someone is done.

She can make spontaneous friends at a park.

She can reenact Cinderella.

She can tell you her best friend is the snow monster from Frozen.

She can jump

She can gallop.

She can summersault.

She is a big girl.  Our big girl.

M.B.

If I cross my fingers and wish on the right stars,

Can he please be a mama's boy?

Sorry, B, I know it isn't exactly a term most men aspire to, but I want to love and hug you always.

My sweet little guy always has special smiles for me every time he sees me, and I treasure every one.

His sweet chubby fingers grip mine so tightly, and I never want to let go.

It seems so ridiculous that I ever wondered if I could love my second baby as much as my first.

He makes my heart so happy, and I'll spend the rest of my life sneaking kisses on his cheeks every chance I get.
